Marvel order: All movies and series of the MCU sorted chronologically

Does “Eternals” take place after the fight against Thanos, before or even in between? At what time does Captain Marvel appear and when did “The Defenders” actually form? We reveal the correct order of all Marvel movies and series about Captain America, The Avengers & Co. including content descriptions. We also give you a preview of planned projects that will further expand the MCU in the coming years.

Since Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU for short, many more films, short films and series based on the superheroes and stories by comic authors Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby have been released. The abundance of material and characters can sometimes cause a little confusion. To help you keep an overview of the Marvel order, we have put together several classifications for you below based on different criteria.

Marvel order: All films and series by theatrical release

If we take all releases into account, the MCU is currently divided into six different phases, which are set to last until 2027. We are currently in the middle of phase five. While the first three phases concentrate on the introduction of the characters and focus on the Inifinity Stones several times, phases four to six focus on the multiverse, including the so-called“Secret Wars” conflict.

Please note: With this division, the timelines of the individual storylines may differ. So if you want to see the material in the correct chronological order, you can either use the official timeline of the most important MCU works or take a look at the complete list of all MCU productions below.

Order of the most important Marvel films and series

Although this breakdown includes all film releases, it does skimp on some series such as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the “What If… ?” Production, which deals with the idea of alternative timelines within the MCU. In addition, all Marvel One-Shot content, which is included as bonus material with some films, is disregarded. The order here refers to the official MCU timeline from Marvel Studios.

Order of ALL Marvel movies and series

If you really want to take in all the MCU content, you should stick to the much longer complete version. The Marvel series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ” in particular regularly packs a punch in terms of running time due to its multiple seasons. But some other works such as Daredevil or Jessica Jones will also tie you up for much longer with three seasons each. As with the most important Marvel films and series, this overview is also based on the official MCU timeline.

Please note: Fortunately, you will find the one-shot content as bonus material on the DVDs / Blu-rays of some of the main films. Typically, these short stories provide further small insights into the events before or after the actual plot line. You can shorten your search for them with the following list:

Billionaire Lebemann joins forces with Tony Stark to launch a peace program that backfires and unleashes the menacing villain Ultron to wipe out humanity. When a bomb attack exacerbates the situation and an old friend is considered a suspect, the differences of opinion escalate and lead to growing conflicts within the group.

In 1942, during the Second World War, Steve Rogers is rejected to fight against Nazi Germany due to his poor health. This mission reveals itself to be part of a larger whole.

Adventurer Peter Quill steals a mysterious orb and becomes the target of a dangerous bounty hunter whose plans threaten the universe. In order to survive, Quill reluctantly teams up with four unusual outsiders. Together, the group realizes the true meaning and danger of the orb. Nick Fury, the leader of an international peace organization operating worldwide under the name S.H.I.E.L.D., assembles a team of superheroes, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, the Incredible Hulk and Black Widow, to protect the world from a threat from Thor’s own family. Their combined forces are needed to avert a global catastrophe.

The scientist Bruce Banner, who transforms into a green monster when angry, lives a secluded life in exile, on the run from the military general Ross, who wants to use him for his own purposes. While Banner searches for a cure, the military and the ambitious soldier Blonsky are on his trail. In this desperate situation, the researcher finds help from Becky, the general’s daughter, to tame his uncontrollable powers.

A team of extraordinary superheroes, consisting of the cosmic warrior Captain Marvel, a young heroine from Jersey City named Ms. Marvel and an astronaut, are brought together to confront an unusual threat posed by a wormhole caused by an alien Kree revolutionary. Together as “The Marvels”, the team must save the universe from a catastrophic crisis.

Thor, a mighty warrior from the realm of Asgard, is known for his strength and courage, but also for his arrogance. His rash actions spark an ancient war. As punishment, the Arse is sent to Earth to learn humility. Initially he finds this difficult, but when humanity is threatened by a powerful enemy who appears to have links to Asgard, Thor springs into action.

When a galactic assassin appears and sets his sights on destroying the gods, Thor is involuntarily brought out of retirement. The mighty Thor is captured and robbed of his mighty hammer Mjölnir. In a desperate race against time, our hero now tries to return to his homeland without his fearsome weapon to avert a merciless threat. His only chance of escape leads him through deadly battles on the alien planet of Sakaar, where the God of Thunder encounters an old green ally who turns out to be the strongest fighter on the battlefield.

In Asgard, Odin decides the fate of his adopted son Loki. At the same time, a new threat emerges in the cosmos: The dark elf Malekith and his army threaten the universe. Thor meets his beloved Jane, who is possessed by a demonic power linked to the appearance of the dark elf. In order to save Jane and defeat Malekith, the Avenger must build up a force of his own and venture into the shadows of Asgard. The god of thunder is dependent on Loki’s help.

What happens in the Marvel series?

We accompany former Avenger Clint Barton on what should be a simple mission to get back to his family in time for Christmas. However, this task turns out to be an unexpected challenge when events from his past threaten to thwart his plans. At his side: a young, ambitious archer who dreams of becoming a heroine herself. Together, the pair must face dangers that threaten not only their own goals, but also the festive spirit of the holidays.

This series tells the story of Thor’s adopted brother Loki, who is held by a time authority after escaping to another reality. This organization monitors the course of time and takes action against unwanted deviations. Scrutinized by an enigmatic agent, the adopted son of Odin must now help to sort out the chaos in the timelines. Cooperation between him and the organization proves difficult, as his unpredictable character often clashes with the strict rules of the authority.

New York, 1946, top agent Peggy Carter struggles with the loss of Steve Roger aka Captain America and finds herself in a world where only office work is on the agenda. When an old acquaintance suddenly gets into trouble, the employee slips into the role of a secret double agent to prevent an impending catastrophe. Her mission takes her to Hollywood, where Carter is drawn into a mysterious case that leads the agent to a dangerous substance that poses a threat to all life on Earth.

Under the code name S.H.I.E.L.D., short for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Operations and Logistics Division, a global organization investigates supernatural events and extraordinary superhumans on Earth. Agent Phil Coulson and his assembled team deal with cases such as Project Centipede and other mysteries that are closely linked to the plots of Marvel films such as “Thor: The Dark World” and “The Return of the First Avenger”.

Yo-Yo is faced with a difficult decision when a legal agreement is to be signed by her. The heroine’s extraordinary abilities are put to the test, as the content has a direct impact on a personal mission. Nevertheless, our protagonist sets off and crosses the path of Shield agents. In the midst of conflicts and challenges, her unwavering determination to do the right thing is revealed.

The plot follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers linked by a common destiny who possess extraordinary powers. Tandy can turn light into weapons, while Tyrone has the ability to create darkness. As the duo “Cloak & Dagger”, the two realize that their powers are even stronger together. But their developing feelings for each other bring a new complexity to their partnership and challenges that go beyond their superpowers.

In a New York neighborhood known for its rough corners and dark alleys, lawyer Matt Murdock fights for justice. His special ability to see the world around him despite his blindness makes him an extraordinary fighter against injustice. In daylight, Murdock defends the rights of the disadvantaged in courtrooms, but as soon as night falls, the lawyer transforms into the vigilant hero known as Daredevil, roaming the shadows of the city and using his unique senses to track down those who break the law.

In the midst of a vibrant metropolis, Maya Lopez, a young woman with extraordinary abilities, chases after her roots. Confronted with a dangerous gang of criminals who relentlessly hunt Maya down, she seeks refuge in the city of her childhood. Once there, she is confronted with her family’s deep-rooted secrets. Surrounded by tension and conflict, she must confront the shadows of her past and decides on a courageous fight against those who are stalking her.

A group of superheroes with experimentally altered genes, the so-called Inhumans, find themselves in an epic conflict that extends far beyond their homeland. Forced to leave their ancestral world, these superhumans of royal descent use their extraordinary abilities to fight dark forces that not only threaten their city, but also want to upset the balance of the universe.

The plot follows a Buddhist monk named Danny Rand. Declared dead 15 years ago, Rand suddenly reappears in New York one day. His access to a mystical power known as the “Iron Fist” gives the young man extraordinary skills. Now the kung fu fighter must choose between family obligations and his role as protector of the city, while new threats lurk around the next corner.

You follow former superhero Jessica Jones, who ends her career after a traumatic experience and now wants to reinvent herself as a private detective in New York. Confronted with the return of an old enemy from her past, Jones is forced to confront her demons once again in order to put the matter to bed for good.

The story tells of former inmate Luke Cage, who gains superhuman strength and indestructible skin through a sabotaged experiment. Back in Harlem, Luke tries to rebuild his life, but is soon drawn into the battle for the heart of his city. After the death of his friend and employer, Pop, is accidentally shot by a gangster, Cage takes up the fight against the gangster boss and his unscrupulous cousin.

A group of teenagers who actually have little in common and some of whom don’t even particularly like each other find themselves in a surprising situation. The teenagers suddenly have to flee together from their biggest enemies – and they are their own parents. As it turns out, their guardians are part of an organization of supervillains. Forced to work together, the children see only one goal: to stop those who gave birth to them and whom they trust the most.

A sinister conspiracy is brewing in New York City and a group of Marvel superheroes are up against it. Each of them has unique abilities and a strong sense of justice. Together they form a team dedicated to fighting a well-organized gang of criminals. Known as “The Defenders”, they take on the challenge of fighting evil in their city and restoring order.

Former soldier Frank Castle returns from a mission in Afghanistan and is confronted with a personal tragedy: the brutal murder of his family. This event leads Castle to take the law into his own hands. Under a new alias, the veteran begins an intense campaign of revenge against those responsible and the city’s underworld. His path is marked by violence and the search for justice, while the self-proclaimed Punisher takes on organized crime.

A mild-mannered souvenir salesman named Steven Grant is suddenly plagued by inexplicable movie tears and strange memories. Steven discovers that his head is suffering from a dissociative identity disorder that has him sharing his life with an unknown mercenary. When unexpectedly dangerous adversaries enter his life, the two personalities must learn to coordinate with each other. In the process, the two are drawn into a mythical world of Egyptian gods where their abilities and understanding of each other are put to the test.

A Muslim-American teenager named Kamala from Jersey City, passionate about the world of video games and fan fiction, experiences everyday life between school and home. An avid follower of superheroes, especially one legendary character, the girl often feels out of place. But her life takes a dramatic turn when the young lady unexpectedly gains superpowers similar to those of her heroes. She discovers that life with extraordinary abilities is both exciting and challenging.

Secret agent Nick Fury discovers that Earth is under threat from a group of shape-shifting aliens known as Skrulls. Fury mobilizes a team of trusted allies, including the alien Talos, who already lives on Earth and is a Skrull himself. Together, the group faces the challenge of averting the impending invasion and protecting humanity in what becomes a thrilling battle against time.

Jennifer, a lawyer specializing in cases involving superhuman individuals, struggles through the challenges of her single life in her 30s and the unusual circumstances that made her a giant green superhero. While her law firm takes advantage of the unique situation to use the super-lawyer as a figurehead for a special department, her abilities lead her into a world of heroes and villains.

Now that Captain America aka Steve Rogers has relinquished his role as the nation’s icon, Sam Wilson as Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier take on the responsibility of continuing his legacy. Numerous challenges and adversaries await, including Helmut Zemo, who threatens the existence of all superheroes after tragic events in his homeland. This confrontation puts the two unlikely allies to the test and forces our heroes to work together to protect their friend’s legacy.

In this somewhat atypical superhero series, everything revolves around Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch, who is mourning the loss of her partner Android Vision. To escape her pain, Wanda creates a fantasy world reminiscent of classic American sitcoms. Living on with her deceased partner still seems possible. But the distorted reality creates a psychologically precarious state in her mind and raises a crucial question.

This animated Marvel series explores alternative scenarios of the well-known superhero universe in a completely new way. Each episode deliberately poses a “what would have happened if” question and immediately offers an imaginative answer. The smallest changes in the plot could trigger completely different events and thus massively influence the outcome of the rest of the story.

What are the Marvel One-Shots about?

In this short film you meet Agent Carter one year after the events in Captain America – The First Avenger, who now works for a security agency. Carter is the only woman on her team and is not taken seriously by her colleagues and superiors. Despite the lack of field missions, the agent takes the initiative when an opportunity arises to act on her own initiative. A phone call changes her career path forever.

To get their point across, the agents devise a plan in which the organization sends a key Avengers figure into negotiations with a high-ranking military officer.

In a subplot following the events of Iron Man 3, Trevor finds himself in prison. A journalist conducts a series of interviews with him, the final of which is to find out his true identity and life story. Suddenly it turns out that the fake media representative is working for a secret organization that has plans for Trevor.

Agent Phil Coulson is passing through on his way to Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer. During a brief stop at a gas station for a snack, the place is raided by criminals. Coulson responds calmly to the thieves’ demand for his car keys and gun. However, the S.H.I.E.L.D member is not so easily fooled.
