Brighter lights are not reduced with above-average effectiveness on either side and can make surrounding objects in the room visible on the screen.
Due to the lower light intensity, the B3 has a somewhat slight disadvantage here. In general, this category is actually not a strengths of many OLED TVs. Backlit models have more of an advantage here thanks to their higher luminosity.
One observation is regularly made with OLEDs: the amazingly good viewing angle. Colors only begin to shift slightly from an extremely oblique position.
Although this point is a little more noticeable with the B3, it hardly affects the overall really good performance in this category. Both televisions are therefore an excellent choice for use in front of larger seating areas in the room.
Changes in the brightness of the B3 are already evident in conventional operation without HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) support. At the top end, the mid-range OLED is therefore not only quite clearly below its predecessor, but almost on a par with the A-series from the previous year, which was discontinued in 2023.
Although the performance in this area is still pretty decent, LG has clearly not taken a step forward – most likely due to the restructuring of the range.
The B3 also lags behind its successor in the high-contrast color space and shows that LG has corrected the overall brightness downwards. This affects the HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) brilliance first and foremost.
As a result, the B2 can display small details and highlights somewhat more splendidly. The 2022 version also beats its new replacement in terms of color volume. The power consumption is in favor of the B3, however.
OLEDs have significant advantages compared to conventional LED TVs in many respects when displaying films and series. Firstly, the high contrast with its perfect black levels comes into play here. Due to the design and self-illuminating pixels, so-called blooming does not matter at all.
While DTSMulti-channel-sound-system (Surround Sound) competing with Dolby Digital:X is available as a passthrough solution via eARC on the B3, LG has once again opted not to implement Dolby Vision IQDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits, which can adapt to the ambient brightness support as an additional HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) format.
Even though the audio performance of flat-screen TVs is often sufficient for everyday use, systems quickly reach their limits when it comes to music and home entertainment. That’s why you should at least add a decent soundbar and subwoofer to your setup.
On the gaming side, LG has kept all the features from the previous year. So no matter which TV you choose, you’ll be well equipped for gaming.
In addition to fast response and input times, this also includes a Dolby VisionDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits output at 120 hertz on both TVs. Only the amount of connections remains the same with two HDMI 2.1 ports.
AMD FreeSyncVariable Refresh Rate with AMD graphics cards or consoles, G-SyncVariable Refresh Rate for Nvidia graphics cards compatibility and LG’s well-known Game Optimizer are also available. Differences arise primarily on the panel of the B2 due to the aforementioned better HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) performance. Highlights and bright contours are presented even more impressively on the 2022 TV.
Thanks to the virtually instant response time, movements and fast objects appear on both screens with virtually no subsequent blurring. As usual, this advantage turns into a disadvantage with content that has a low frame rate.
For example, playback at 24 frames per second appears to stutter. Although optional interpolationArtificial calculation of more frames than the source material has to offer provides additional clarity, it can create unsightly artifacts when there is a lot of action and fast movements.
Uniform color areas are reproduced cleanly overall and therefore visually contribute to an improvement in quality.
While you navigate around the 22 version of LG’s webOS operating system on the B2, the B3 runs version 23 to match the current year. The user interface is quick and easy to use as usual.
You can create individual user profiles on both systems to customize the start page to suit your needs. Many apps and well-known streaming services are of course also included.
Neither device has Hands Free Voice Control for voice-controlled direct communication with the TV.
Although LG has scaled back the HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) performance of the B3 due to the reclassification, the model from the 2023 line-up can just about hold its own in the OLED mid-range.
Anyone hoping for a major update or even EX technology will fall by the wayside for 2023 and will have to look elsewhere. This also puts the really good price-performance ratio of the predecessor into perspective.
If a slightly better A2 with 120 HertzHertz is the derived SI-unit of frequency with 1Hz=1/s – When talking about TVs this means how many different pictures a TV can display in one second. is not sufficient for you at this point, there is still the prospect of a more powerful CS9 from the previous year as well as the B3 or the current C series model. In any case, our comparison between the LG OLED B3 vs LG OLED B2 was won by the latter.
