The reduction of noticeable reflections and other light sources does not work so well with many OLED TVs. Coupled with the often lower luminance, highlights and indirect light are therefore attenuated to a decent, but not really good level.
This is why there is a risk that the picture performance is already insufficient in normal daylight and good visibility will then no longer be possible. Both panels show a pink respectively violet tint. With the LG OLED evo C3, however, this tint is somewhat more subtle.
Both TVs have a great viewing angle, where the picture does not fade. Slight colour shifts are nevertheless caused by an oblique view. However, you will hardly notice this during daily use.
You can therefore take up positions far around the centre of the picture. To counteract image distortion at too wide angles, you should generally consider a diagonal of more than 65 inches, if space and budget permits it.
Although smaller areas are generally not as bright on the panel using this mode, the LG OLED evo C3 has slight advantages in terms of surface brightness.
Here, the LG OLED evo C2 is not quite as strong. On top of that, the ABL in the 2023 model is a little more restrained than in the predecessor. When it comes to energy efficiency, the OLEDs are on the same consumption level.
Whereas the aforementioned area brightness in SDRStandard Dynamic Range – image/video with a conventional gamma curve (opposite: HDR) – “normal” videos mode gives the C3 a slight advantage, the conditions in HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) mode are equally balanced. However, since small, extremely luminous detail and image segments are limited more strongly overall by the brightness control of the C2, the successor can prevail when it comes to extended display of highlights and bright image regions.
Its lower power consumption rounds off the picture even further to the benefit of the 2023 model. In comparison with other OLEDs, both TVs perform well overall. However, the luminance is not exactly sufficient for bright rooms.
The two models from the C series both feature an optimal, deep black and an outstanding contrast. BloomingAdding a brighter area around bright objects on a dark background is therefore naturally not an issue. LG continues to use Dolby VisionDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits with IQ support for the C3. However, the follow-up to the C2 does not have an IMAX label either.
Instead, DTSMulti-channel-sound-system (Surround Sound) competing with Dolby Digital:X is now available. Although the speakers cannot reproduce the codec directly, it is possible for the TV to pass the signal on to an external device as a passthrough solution. This option is not available with the C2.
This is another category in which the two TVs literally go hand in hand. Equipment or performance overlaps are almost undetectable. Even in terms of input lag and screen response, neither side has a consistent advantage.
The specifications range from a 120 hertz panel and four HDMI 2.1 portsΒ to several image synchronisation functions such as AMD FreeSyncVariable Refresh Rate with AMD graphics cards or consoles. Cloud Gaming and the already familiar Game Optimizer are coming as well on both sides.
True OLED performance can be seen in the responsiveness of both screens. However, this results in a slight, technically induced blurriness that appears behind fast-moving objects. LG offers a BFI function with which you can counteract this.
We recommend not using this setting, however, as it makes the picture much darker. Given the comparatively low brightness of OLED TVs, this results in an avoidable loss of luminance in favour of a somewhat less clear picture in fast-moving scenes.
While the LG OLED evo C2 uses webOS 22 as its operating system, version 23 is available on the C3. User profiles are still customisable in order to adjust the start page depending on your preferences. The easy navigation through the user interface with the help of the popular Magic Remote has stayed the same.
However, the Google Assistant is only available on the C2. In terms of sound, both TVs continue to rely on a 2.2-channel setup with 40 watts of continuous power. Apart from that, there are no significant differences among the other specifications.
Whether the LG OLED evo C3 actually has a real justification as a successor model in view of the fairly manageable differences is at least debatable.
If you don’t yet own an OLED or still have a “older device” at home, you are buying a good and excellently equipped TV with the 2023 version.
If you already own one of the predecessors from previous years, we advise against buying one. The differences in our comparison between the LG OLED evo C3 vs LG OLED evo C2 are too marginal.
Especially compared to its direct predecessor, you don’t really get any significant added value from LG. On the other hand, the C2 is now available at a much more attractive price, with barely worse performance and features.
