Based on the newly implemented Micro Lens Array technology with additional heatsink, the LG OLED evo G3 once again offers a leap in brightness. At the same time, the South Korean manufacturer maintains the minimal depth of the TV and continues to rely on a comprehensive range of features, which this time also includes official DTS:X support as a passthrough option.

As in previous years, Sony’s flagship TV did not hit the shelves until summer. In return, customers who choose this comparatively expensive model – known as the A95L – receive a high-performance top-of-the-range device based on a QD panel with great luminance, really good color optimization and other extras such as the well-known Bravia Cam that extends the scope of functionalities.

Effective reduction in both cases

In terms of reflection resistance, many OLED models are usually not positioned above average, even if this point is perhaps suggested to you more positively in one place or another. Especially in dark scenes, light sources can quickly become distracting on the panel.

With both the G3 and the A95L, however, we can rightfully say that both screens actually counteract reflections well to a certain extent. But beware: more light in the surroundings makes the surface more susceptible.

No serious obstacle for OLEDs

One of the key quality features and therefore advantages of OLEDs is their ability to maintain a consistently bright picture without color shifts, even when viewed at an angle.

In short, both televisions have almost no shortcomings in this area. Conversely, this allows for flexible positioning and is particularly useful for viewing sessions in large groups.

Better luminance only with the G3

While the overall performance of the Sony hardly changes compared to HDR mode, the G3’s algorithm generally adjusts the brightness more strongly for large areas.

At the same time, the model is less affected by the automatic brightness control, as it is often the case with other OLED televisions. As a result, the reproduction remains at a constant level and ranks above the display of the A95L.

Screen brilliance among the best

Once again, the bar has been raised twice a time in the OLED segment. Although the A95L has more than good values in this area, LG does not allow itself to be outdone with the G3 and can more than match it. Without question, both televisions achieve a performance here that only relatively few TV devices in this segment have been able to reach so far.

On one hand, this is clearly the classification in the top luminance level, on the other these screens are also missing an essential factor: sufficient brightness in the surface. You should therefore always consider how and when your TV is used. If it is often viewed in bright light conditions, it is best to opt for a strong backlight.

Cinema TV two times please

Film and series content benefit in particular from the outstanding contrast and a display free from blooming on almost optimal blacks. Paired with many HDR formats and additional IMAX support on the A95L, both televisions create nearly optimal conditions for a full-fledged viewing experience.

As usual, however, you should help out a little in terms of sound. Due to the flat design, there is obviously still a lot of potential here based on the DTS:X and Dolby Atmos codecs offered. Ideally, you should use a powerful home theater system via the respective eARC port.

A few advantages on the G3

Despite the great gaming capabilities on both sides and the PlayStation 5 exclusive features, the G3 has several points that put this Gallery TV ahead of the competition here. Firstly, there is still the issue of HDMI 2.1 quantity on the Sony. Two ports are simply not sufficient for a top class device today.

Although both are compatible with Dolby Vision Gaming, only the LG offers the HDR format at up to 120 frames per second during gaming. Finally, the more attractive price-performance ratio also underlines our result in favor of the G3.

Viewing stability with great clarity

As both panels are capable of 120 Hertz, movements appear much smoother and with less persistent blurring as soon as you activate the interpolation function. However, you will have to accept potential artifacts if there is a lot of activity on the screen going on.

Low frame rates can lead to noticeable stuttering, but this can be removed in the settings. Color areas are displayed evenly by the televisions. As a result, the reproduction does not leave any noticeable spots or darker edges on the screen.

Several unique selling points

Each of the flagships has its own unique selling points. A special feature of the G3 is the Gallery Mode in combination with a flat design of the housing including plane wall mounting.

Sony is trying to score points with the A95L by offering a customizable stand design and the familiar Bravia Cam, which provides an extended range of functions.

In contrast to the Japanese manufacturer’s rather bulky Android solution, LG’s in-house webOS 23 makes navigation around the menus more user-friendly overall.

Our conclusion:
Color volume vs peak brilliance

When comparing the LG OLED evo G3 vs Sony A95L QD-OLED, both devices from the 2023 model year clearly occupy the top ranks within the OLED segment, making them the top representatives in this area. In terms of performance, both devices are more or less on par.

The main differences relate to unique elements such as the design, gadgets like the Bravia Cam and the selection of available screen sizes. However, as is almost always the case, the decisive factor is likely to be the price. Here, the LG OLED evo G3 simply offers a more affordable option.

Consider that even the 83-inch version is currently offered at a lower price than an A95L with 77 inches. Therefore, LG’s top model comes out on top by a narrow margin.
