OLED Lineup

What characterises this product line? OLED technology is one of the most advanced display types on the market and Sony is once again launching its own OLEDs in 2021. Typical for OLED TVs is an excellent picture quality in dark environments, which is generated by a perfect black and a theoretically infinitely high contrast. This also makes Sony TVs an increasingly popular choice for film and series enthusiasts.

Upper Midrange TV

A80J Series

The A80J is one of the more affordable OLEDs in this year’s line-up and fits perfectly into your home cinema. The OLED panel provides theoretically infinite contrast and deep blacks, which, in combination with the XR processor, has a very positive effect on the picture quality.

An impressive picture never fails to excite gamers, and the A80J offers all the features that you need. However, VRR and ALLM are unfortunately missing completely. That might change with a future update, however.

The sound is often a shortcoming of flat TVs, but the Sony TV can still stand out here. The screen acts as a speaker and can imitate 3D sound.

Compared to the X90J, the difference is made by the OLED panel, especially in the viewing angle, which is now much wider, as well as with motion handling.

A90J Series

The flagship of this year’s lineup is without a doubt the A90J, which only a few TVs can match in terms of picture quality. In addition to the advantages of the OLED panel when it comes to contrast and black level, the A90J can also become brighter and reaches a maximum value of 850 nits.

Although it cannot compete with Samsung’s QLEDs, HDR content looks fantastic in combination with Dolby Vision. An additional feature is the new XR processor, which further optimises the picture quality.

As with its little brother, the A80J, the sound on the A90J comes directly out of the screen, putting you right in the middle of the action. The Acoustic Auto Calibration further adjusts the sound according to the rooms conditions and the viewer, creating an enveloping cinematic atmosphere. The only shortcoming of the A90J is the lack of VRR, which would complete the gaming package.

LED Lineup (Full Array)

What characterises this product line? The Bravia XR line features the new XR processor, which uses cognitive intelligence to adjust the picture and sound of the TV. In addition, the TVs in the XR series feature Full Array Local Dimming, which can significantly improve the black level.

Upper Midrange TV

X90J Series

The first model in the high-end Bravia XR series is the X90J, which already has the new processor built in. This upgrades the picture and sound quality with cognitive intelligence for an even better experience. Together with Dolby Vision and Triluminos Pro technology, movies and series can be watched the way the creators intended.

At first glance, the X90J also appears to be an excellent gaming TV and it also has a 120 Hertz panel, two HDMI 2.1 interfaces and a good response time as well as low input lag. However, VRR and true ALLM are not included.

Compared to the X85J, the X90J can score especially in HDR, which is due to the significantly better processor. Here, film and series fans should rather go for the X90J.

X95J Series

This year’s LED flagship can convince in almost all areas and is thus more than a good all-rounder. For home cinema fans, the X95J offers everything the heart desires to bring real cinema feeling home.

The built-in XR processor ensures excellent picture optimisation and, in combination with Dolby Vision and great upscaling, films and series look simply outstanding – whether classics or new blockbusters.

Although the motion handling is excellent, VRR and a true ALLM are still missing for the perfect gaming experience. Otherwise, Sony has caught up with the LED flagship compared to last year, as there are now two HDMI 2.1 interfaces, making 4K 4K with 120 Herz possible.

Z9J Series

Sony’s Z9J is truly an 8K behemoth that packs a punch. Not only does it offer 8K resolution, but it also has the superb picture quality of a Sony TV, which is why HDR content looks terrific.

That’s thanks to a peak brightness of 3000 nits and a contrast of 5000:1, but it’s Sony’s image processing in tandem with Dolby Vision that ensures the Z9J can rival even the OLEDs.

The Z9J also does well in gaming, even though the TV has no VRR and no real ALLM. However, gamers should still have fun, as three HDMI 2.1 interfaces are available and the motion handling is also great. Xbox Series X owners can also enjoy Dolby Vision gaming, but only with 4K at 60 Hertz.

LED Lineup

What characterises this product line? With its Bravia UHD TVs, Sony also offers entry-level models that are less expensive but do not have high-quality features. Nevertheless, they perform well in various areas and are also easy on the wallet.

Entry Level TV

X80J Series

The X80J is a Bravia TV for the small budget. Unfortunately, this is noticeable by the lack of some features, but the Sony TV can still convince in some points.

Due to the wide viewing angle, the TV is well suited for watching sports with several people without having to compromise on picture quality. However, due to the contrast of only 1120:1, the TV is not recommended in dark environments.

While the motion handling is fine, the X80J unfortunately lacks any gaming features to fully exploit the new consoles. The affordable Bravia has to do without HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM. In this respect, you have to limit yourself to the older consoles if you want to gamble extensively.

Midrange TV

X85J Series

The X85J is considered a mid-range TV in this year’s line-up and can already convince with a few better features. The picture quality is already significantly higher due to the contrast of 6300:1 and the X85J also produces a deep and equivalent black, despite the lack of a local dimming function.

One drawback here is the narrow viewing angle, which occurs due to the VA panel. In the gaming sector, there is a clear difference to the X80J, because the big brother has two HDMI 2.1 interfaces and an Auto Low Latency Mode.

This enables gaming in 4K resolution and 120 frames per second with an always low input lag. A VRR function is still missing.
