LG TV Lineup 2023 – Details & adaptations

With the B3, LG continues the succession of the popular B2, which was regarded as a price-performance tip. An important component is the Alpha7 Gen6 4K AI processor with AI Sound Pro, AI Picture Pro, AI Brightness Control and 4K AI Super Upscaling.

According to LG, optimal picture and sound quality should be made possible on this basis. The viewing experience is further intensified with Filmmaker Mode and Dolby AtmosObject-based surround sound format with 3D-Sound from any direction. In terms of HDR support, the B3 uses the Dolby VisionDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits standard in addition to HDR10HDR10 Media Profile – HDR with a color depth of 10 Bit in the Rec. 2020 colorspace Pro and HLG.

In addition, the Smart TV is equipped with webOS 23 and brings voice compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant. AirPlay 2 and HomeKit provide additional Apple connectivity. With 55″, 65″ and 77 Zoll, the B3 series is also available in three screen sizes for 2023.

With the LG OLED C3, the South Korean manufacturer continues the story of the popular gaming series. Equipped with the so-called Brightness Booster as part of the Light Control Architecture, the panel provides an even brighter and more brilliant picture. At the same time, OLED technology ensures the typical black with rich colours.

Increased processing power is provided by the 6th generation Alpha9 unit based on improved software algorithms such as AI Picture Pro or 4K AI Super Upscaling. Additional features such as HDR10HDR10 Media Profile – HDR with a color depth of 10 Bit in the Rec. 2020 colorspace Pro and Dolby VisionDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits are practically a simple formality. The Game Optimizer shows you all the settings for gaming at a glance. With Cloud Gaming, you can play a whole world of games.

Unlike the C2, the C3 will be limited to a single colour configuration and will therefore only be available in grey. A real novelty is the modular stand, which allows you to attach LG compatible soundbars directly to the base of the TV. This ensures optimal positioning and enables wall-mounting without the need for additional hardware.

In addition, LG’s 2023 models are the first TVs to be certified by the HDMI organisation for the recently announced Quick Media Switching Variable Refresh RateVariable Refresh Rate – synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the output refresh rate of the graphics card, or QMS-VRR, to eliminate the momentary “black screen” when switching between different sources.

The extremely flat G series is also entering its next round and once again promises to be really plan on the wall. But that is exactly what this model was designed for, based on the so-called Gallery design. Conspicuously inconspicuous is also the motto of the 2023 model year.

The biggest change, however, and thus also a new generation of OLED panels, is hidden beneath the bonnet of the LG OLED G3. This refers to the meta panel based on the so-called micro lens array principle. An additional increase in brightness can be achieved with this technology.

In marketing terms, LG calls this Brightness Booster Max. Since we are talking about the 4K top model here, you get a large equipment bundle that leaves practically nothing to be desired. In addition, LG also grants the G3 a 5-year warranty on the panel.

Smooth gaming is made possible by a lightning-fast response time of 0.1 milliseconds, NVIDIA G-SyncVariable Refresh Rate for Nvidia graphics cards compatibility, AMD FreeSync Premium and VRRVariable Refresh Rate – synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the output refresh rate of the graphics card support.

Since LG has not announced any additional 8K models for 2023, the Z series is the only remaining model series that will provide you with a resolution that goes beyond UHD. At least that’s the theory.

In practice, however, only very few will be able to afford this design model. Even the “cheaper” variant, with an RRP of 15,000 euros, already puts a comparatively large price dent in the financial planning.

This year, the premium model is not only technically enhanced by the Evo panel already established from previous models, but also gets the full meta-update and thus has – just like the G3 – the micro-lens array technology.

With webOS 23, you get the current navigation platform including the familiar streaming apps, Google’s and Amazon’s voice assistant as well as the full Apple connection via AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

The core of the QNED80 is an IPS panel with a combination of Quantum Dots and Nanocell technology. The screen is illuminated by LED backlighting on an edge-lit basis. The illumination takes place from the edges of the housing. While this approach offers real advantages in terms of colours and viewing angles, the device does not make the best impression in terms of contrast.

LG uses the Alpha 7 from the 6th processor generation as the main processing unit. In addition to the HDR10 format that is common today, Dolby Vision is also available here – as with many LG models. Within the framework of the well-known Filmmaker Mode, unwanted image processing and optimisation options are deactivated in order to ensure the most pristine film experience possible.

Finally, the board also offers a variety of connections that make the QNED81 a next-gen gaming TV. These include HDMI connections with 4K at 120 hertz, AMD FreeSyncVariable Refresh Rate with AMD graphics cards or consoles and ALLM. These capabilities provide a smoother and more responsive gaming experience.

Equipped with webOS 23, the QNED80 features Alexa, Google Assistant, AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to integrate the TV directly into your smart home system and control it using your voice.

The QNED85 has an IPS panel that is illuminated based on mini LEDs. On one hand, this ensures natural and vivid colours, on the other the TV can illuminate the screen more precisely and counteracts the often poor contrast. On top of that, it also minimises the unpopular outline glow around bright objects on dark backgrounds.

An Alpha 7 processor from generation number 6 is the core component for the optimisation of picture and sound as well as the navigation across the webOS 23 operating system. In addition to HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLGHLG or Hybrid Log Gamma facilitates the transmission and reception of signals by combining the SDR and HDR signals. If the device supports HDR, the HDR part of the signal is used, otherwise the SDR part. are available as additional options.

Via eARC, the TV can pass on an uncompressed Dolby Atmos signal and thus also complement the viewing experience in terms of sound. In addition, the TV will be able to pass DTS:X through to a compatible sound system.

Gamers will also get a lot of functions that will make gaming on the local next-gen console more fun. These include a variable refresh rate via AMD FreeSync, an optimised gaming mode for the shortest possible input and response times, as well as 120 hertz at full 4K resolution.

With the UR7000 series, LG prepared a model that has a minimum level of basic equipment, but is still quite far away from the scope of features and picture performance of the top models.

Therefore, not only do you have to accept significantly lower brightness values and less processing power, but also some sacrifices in terms of HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) support, sound and gaming features. With the UR7800, for example, you get the currently weakest processor with the Alpha 5, only basic HDR10 and an IPS panel without extras offering rather moderate contrast and below-average luminance. The 50-inch size is an exception. Here, the South Korean manufacturer again offers a VAVertical Alignment, type of LCD Panel panel with a somewhat better contrast value.

For this reason, such simple UHD models – also referred to as budget or low budget – are only suitable to a limited extent for use in bright lighting conditions or for displaying brilliant picture content in HDR. On the other hand, these factors are of course reflected in the sales price and make it possible to get large screen diagonals for comparatively low costs.

As with all models in LG’s annual line-up, however, you also get the latest webOS in the 23 version, Alexa and the Google Assistant. In addition, there is also an ALLM mode.

In contrast to the UR7800, the UR8000 offers you a touch more and even comes with the more powerful Alpha 7 processing core for AI-supported computing operations in the largest 86-inch variant.

As already in the case of the smaller brother, the 50-inch version is also equipped with a VA panel instead of using IPS, and thus compensates for the contrast gap at the expense of its viewing angle and colour representation.

Instead of HDMI 2.0b in a twin version, you now have one additional port at your disposal. This gives you a little more leeway in this respect. However, the remaining equipment package remains identical in terms of the current operating system and other features.

This means that you will also have to do without a screen running at 120 frames per second and additional features such as a variable frame rate to prevent screen tearing in games or the output of three-dimensional sound formats like Dolby Atmos.

While the lower-priced modells of the 80- and 70-series do not have a 120 hertz panel, the UHD flagship within the 2023 line-up has a different design. In contrast to the predecessor, LG has installed a more powerful screen in all variants this time.

On one side, this gives you advantages in sports broadcasts with regard to the so-called motion handling, and on the other, it enables the full use of next-gen features for owners of an Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 console.

Local dimming for increased contrast and a QNED display that provides improved colour characteristics are also part of the UR91’s specification and set the model apart from the other UHD TVs in this category as well.

To round off the gaming functions, a game mode with reduced input times and variable image synchronisation via AMD FreeSync is available. Native Dolby Atmos sound is provided via the eARC interface on the HDMI 2 port.
