Sony X95J β The new all-rounder with HDMI 2.1
The Sony X95J Bravia XR is this year’s 4K LED flagship from the Japanese manufacturer. With the significantly faster XR processor and HDMI 2.1 ports, the X95J has what it takes to be more than just an all-rounder this year. The predecessor, the X950H, could already convince with its good picture quality, but a few small things were still missing. Has Sony upgraded in this respect this year?

Minimalistic and modern
The design of the Sony X95J is minimalistic and modern. Thus, it fits seamlessly into any living room without attracting much attention. Still, it draws the eye with its flat design and there are virtually no distractions while watching due to the almost frameless design.
The stands are equally slim and minimalist, and there are up to three different positioning options: Standard position, a narrow position for smaller surfaces, and the soundbar position, where a soundbar can fit unnoticed underneath the unit. But wall mounting is also a possibility with the X95J, as the ports are directed to the side or downwards.
Small holders on the device provide for a clean cable management, through which all cables can be routed, resulting in a tidy overall setup.

- Minimalist design
- Almost frameless
- Flexible installation options
- Wall mounting
- Cable management
Excellent picture quality for dark rooms
The X95J has a 10-bit VAVertical Alignment, type of LCD Panel panel and can convince with a contrast ratio of 4050:1 and a good black value. Thus, it is especially suitable for dark rooms. In combination with Full Array Local Dimming (FALD), details in dark scenes are displayed very well, even though blooming can occur.
With a peak brightness of 1240 nitsSI unit of luminance: 1 nit = 1 cd/m – The best way of measuring and comparing a TVs brightness , the X95J gets good brightness, which renders HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) content very nicely. Combined with the XR Triluminos Pro feature, colors are further optimized so that rich colors and precise details are visible. For dynamic picture optimization, the TV also supports Dolby VisionDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits.
A highlight of this year’s Sony lineup is the XR processor, which has also been installed in the OLED models. It offers significantly more power, better color optimization and good upscaling, which makes even older series and movies look significantly better on the device than on other TVs. In addition, Sony’s devices use cognitive intelligence as a result, whereby pictures are displayed brighter without losing color variety or intensity. Sports fans will also notice the new processor, as fast movements like in soccer are displayed much more smoothly.
Despite the VA panel, the TV has a solid viewing angle, as an X-Wide Viewing Angle layer has been installed. Unfortunately, only the 75 and 85 models have a layer against reflections, but the 65-inch variant does not. The additional layer can significantly minimize reflections. Nevertheless, the 65-inch model should also be able to handle reflections well, even though the TV should not be exposed to direct light.

- 10 bit VA panel
- XR Processor
- Full Array Local Dimming
- Dolby Vision
- Trilumios Pro
- Viewing Angle
- Blooming
- Layer against reflections only at 75 & 85 inch
Good motion handling on the X95J
The motion handling of the Sony X95J is quite impressive. With a low response time of 4ms, movements appear smooth and there is hardly any blurring. If motion blur does occur, the Black Frame InsertionProcess that inserts black “blank images” as intermediate images. This makes movements appear finer and clearer. feature can be activated, which further minimizes blur. Unfortunately, the brightness suffers, so you have to decide individually what is more annoying.
However, the low response time also has drawbacks, since it can cause stutters. Especially slow camera pans can cause these stutters, which can, however, be corrected by the intermediate image calculation. However, this results in the soap opera effect, which is not to everyone’s liking. JudderInconsistent time frame due to the input frequency not mismatching the TV’s frequency (e.g. 24p via 60Hz) can be removed from all sources, though.
The backlight flickers permanently at 720Hz. Other TVs have better rates here, but the flickering is hardly or not at all noticed by the human eye.

- 120 Hz
- Response Time 4ms
- Motion Interpolation
- Judder can be removed
Great for gaming but without VRR
The X95J is a really good TV for gaming. Combining the good motion handling with an input lag of ~10ms, games run smoothly and without any delays. In addition, the two HDMI 2.1 ports offer everything you need for the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. Thus, 4K@120fps is no longer a problem.
A firmware update also subsequently added the VRRVariable Refresh Rate – synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the output refresh rate of the graphics card function, which makes the TV perfect for the PlayStation 5.

- 120 Hz
- HDMI 2.1
- 4K@120fps
- Auto Picture Mode
- Input Lag ~10ms
- VRR
- No FreeSync
- No real ALLM

Surprisingly good sound with mediocre bass
The sound of the X95J is surprisingly good, as it has two separate tweeters as well as a subwoofer. With a total power of 50 watts, the sound is quite sufficient for everyday use, as dialogs are reproduced clearly and the TV also gets loud enough. Furthermore, the sound is individually adapted to the room via the Room Correction feature. The 3D Surround Upscaling feature also provides simulated surround sound, creating a solid soundscape in the living room.
Nevertheless, the sound does not come close to a real cinema atmosphere because it simply lacks bass.Β Those who want more should think about a soundbar or an external sound system. The audio formats Dolby AtmosObject-based surround sound format with 3D-Sound from any direction and DTSMulti-channel-sound-system (Surround Sound) competing with Dolby Digital are also supported and can be passed on uncompressed via the HDMI eARC port.

- 2.2.1 channels with 50W (RMS)
- Clear dialogs
- 3D Surround Upscaling
- Room Correction Feature
- Dolby Atmos
- DTS
- HDMI eARC
- Weak bass
Smart TV with Google TV
This year’s Sony TVs feature the advanced Google TV operating system. However, this is Android in a fancier disguise. The operation runs smoothly and intuitively, but you have to get used to advertisements on the home screen and in the store. Unfortunately, this has become the new standard.
The app selection in the Google Play Store is huge and the common streaming services are already preinstalled and can be accessed via the included remote control at the push of a button. Those who prefer a voice assistant can easily use the integrated Google Assistant or Alexa, but a third-party device is needed for that. Apple users can use Apple Airplay and Apple HomeKit.

The home cinema all-rounder with HDMI 2.1
It is again noticeable this year that the Sony X95J Bravia is primarily aimed at home theater fans. The good picture quality that Sony is known for shows in combination with the solid sound that movie and series fans will not lack anything. Features like Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and DTS make the X95J a solid overall package and even the viewing angle is really good thanks to the built-in X-Wide Viewing Angle layer. Thus, even a family evening in front of the X95J is no longer a problem.
Gaming fans will also have fun with the X95J. Two HDMI 2.1 ports, a low response time, VRR and low input lag ensure long gaming evenings on the new consoles.
