LG UP7000 – 4K on a budget

Published 08/26/21
Update 08/26/21

The UP7000 is another 4K UHD TV from LG that is primarily aimed at people who do not have a large budget. Therefore, the TV belongs to the cheaper 4K models that want to shine with their good price-performance ratio. Unfortunately, they also have to make some compromises and thus fall into a completely different category than the NanoCell or OLED models from the Korean manufacturer. However, the successor of the UN7000 improved in some ways compared to the previous year’s model and is also a solid entry into the 4K world.

Good processing of the UP7000

LG’s UP7000 is completely made of plastic, but it still makes a good and stable impression. Due to the direct backlighting, the TV is not quite as slim as other TVs, but it can still be mounted on the wall without any problems. In addition, the frame is quite narrow, even though the competition definitely uses narrower edges here.

The included feet can also be used which gives the TV a stable hold, even if it still wobbles slightly. The connections are aligned to the side, which makes it much easier to plug them in when mounting the device on a wall. Unfortunately, you have to be creative for a neat cable management.

The 50 and 70 inch sizes have a VA panel installed, while all other sizes have an ADS panel, which is similar to an IPS panel.

Suitable for dark rooms

Due to the installed ADS panel of the UP7000, the contrast is only 1260:1 and the black levels also look rather grayish. The values can vary here because the 50 and 70-inch versions have a VA panel, which is why the contrast is significantly higher. Unfortunately, the UP7000 does not have a local dimming function, which could improve the contrast even more. However, the viewing angle is much larger due to the ADS panel. So you can watch with several people without any disadvantages.

With a peak brightness of 350 nits, the UP7000 unfortunately does not get very bright, which is especially noticeable negatively with HDR content. Highlights unfortunately cannot stand out as they should. Here, the UP7000 is more suitable for everyday use like watching TV shows. The low brightness makes the TV more suitable for dark rooms with few light sources, even though the reflection behavior is okay.

Solid response time

The UP7000 has a refresh rate of 60Hz, regardless of size. However, the response time of ~7ms is average for the price and motion blur is therefore viable with fast movements. Some artifacts are viable and can arise from the motion interpolation The resulting Soap Opera effect is not everyone’s cup of tea making the picture look slightly unrealistic. But the motion interpolation feature ensures that content with low frame rates can be interpolated up to 60Hz to make movements appear smoother and reduce Stutter.

Nevertheless, Stutters can occur and judder can only be removed from 24p sources.

For gamers with low demands

LG’s UP7000 is suitable for gaming, but you should not have high expectations. The response time of ~7ms is average for its price and the input lag of ~11ms is a solid rate so that gaming feels smooth. The Auto Low Latency Mode also ensures that the TV switches into game mode as soon as a console is connected and switched on to keep the input lag as low as possible. However, the UP7000 does not have any gaming features like an HDMI 2.1 port or VRR. The new consoles do work on the UP7000, but you should rather focus on older consoles that don’t utilize such features and are satisfied with a 60Hz panel.

The 43-inch size is particularly well suited as a PC monitor, especially because the viewing angle is very large here.

Mediocre sound for every day use

As with all TVs, the sound on the LG UP7000 is only mediocre, as there is no real bass. The 2.0 channel speakers with a total output of 20W are loud enough for everyday use and dialogs are also reproduced clearly. Distortions can also occur at very high volumes.

To produce more bass, you should think about buying a soundbar, which you can easily connect to the TV via the existing HDMI eARC port. However, DTS or Dolby Atmos are not supported.

LG UP7000 — Advanced Smart TV

The LG UP7000 is a thoroughly smart TV and runs with the webOS 6.0 operating system, which is also found in the manufacturer’s expensive models. This makes it quite easy to use and the system runs smoothly. In addition, the dashboard has room for all the apps you need, although there are also ads that you cannot turn off.

Unfortunately, the included remote is not a Magic Remote, unlike with the slightly more expensive UP8000. This means there is no way to use the voice command, even though the Alexa and Google voice assistants are supported with a third-party device according to the manufacturer. Even the Home Kit and Airplay are supposed to be supported, so Apple users are also covered with the UP7000.

Entry-level TV with certain weaknesses

TVs that want to shine with a good price-performance ratio always have to make certain compromises. LG’s UP7000 is definitely a device for the entry into the 4K world, since it can show quite good features in this respect. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement with a contrast ratio of 1260:1 and a brightness of 350 nits. However, if you use the TV for common TV shows in a dark environment, it is definitely sufficient.

Even gamers get a solid basis, even though you cannot expect miracles here. If you want to use the new consoles to their full potential, you should choose a different TV, since it lacks an HDMI 2.1 port as well as VRR. However, if you want to use the older consoles, the UP7000 is perfect for this case.

The UP7000 is especially suitable if you have a small budget and no big demands. However, if you want to get a real cinema experience in your living room, you should rather reach for another device.
