LG QNED90 MiniLED β new technology promises great pictures
With the QNED90, LG launches the first mini-LED TV that primarily shines with its backlight. The new technology allows dimming individual zones, which brings an even deeper black and higher contrast. The amazing peak brightness makes the QNED90 a good choice, especially in bright rooms, and it comes with the familiar WebOS and revamped remote control. LG is promising a lot from its new mini-LEDs, but can the technology prevail over other devices?

LG QNED90: Stylish look and solid build
In terms of design, the LG QNED90 resembles the LG G1 OLED. Thin edges, excellent workmanship and a nice metal surface on the back give the model a very classy look. Only the crescent-shaped stand protrudes far forward and therefore requires a large TV stand. The metallic look appears high-quality and gives the LG a firm stand.
The back of the QNED90 is kept very simple, and the connections on the sides are easily accessible for wall mounting. Unfortunately, the cable holders stick out a bit, so the TV cannot be mounted completely flush to the wall.
- Clean design
- Thin edges
- Very good workmanship
- Stand needs a lot of space
- Wall mounting not quite flush
Are the mini-LEDs of the LG QNED90 good?
The 10Bit ADS-panel of the LG QNED90 has an astonishingly good contrast and shows its strength especially in the high Full Array Local Dimming mode. This results in a considerably better picture quality than almost all other ADS TVs. The new mini-LED backlight ensures that the TV can keep up with VAVertical Alignment, type of LCD Panel panels and therefore also shines in bright rooms. However, the native contrast is rather mediocre, so blacks look rather gray in a dark room.
Movie lovers will get their money’s worth especially in HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) mode or with Dolby Vision, because the QNED90 impresses with its impressive peak brightness of 1000 nitsSI unit of luminance: 1 nit = 1 cd/m2 – The best way of measuring and comparing a TVs brightness . This can make some scenes in movies particularly stand out, though blooming is especially noticeable in dark scenes. The ADS panel has an excellent color gamut and an amazing gradient display that brings great images in 4K. While there can be some banding in darker shades, it’s not very noticeable.
If you want to watch a sports broadcast with several people, you can do so with the LG QNED90 without any problems. The TV has no problem with reflections due to the high brightness and shows a good picture even from larger angles.
- 10Bit ADS-Panel
- Peak brightness 1000 nits
- Contrast 6000:1
- Saturated colors
- Good viewing angles
- Full Array Local Dimming
- Dolby Vision
- Blooming in dark scenes
LG QNED90 with solid motion handling
The QNED90 has a very good response time of 3 ms and a low motion blur. However, the black frame insertion can only be used at 60 HzHertz is the derived SI-unit of frequency with 1Hz=1/s – When talking about TVs this means how many different pictures a TV can display in one second.. StutterStatic Frames being displayed too long on the screen – no fluid motion occurs in some content because of the fast response time. This is especially noticeable in slow scenes in movies or series. The ADS panel manages up to 120 Hz in 4K and can remove judder from any source – all without additional settings. On top of that, the LG is completely flicker-free, which is much easier on the eyes.
- 3 ms response time
- Removes judder from any source
- Completely flicker free
- Black frame insertion only at 60 Hz
Comprehensive gaming package
Gamers are well equipped with the QNED90: The LG has two HDMI 2.1 interfaces, is G-SyncVariable Refresh Rate for Nvidia graphics cards compatible and supports FreeSync PremiumVariable Refresh Rate with AMD graphics cards or consoles with at least 120fps at Full HD. Thus, you get a 4K experience in 120 HzHertz is the derived SI-unit of frequency with 1Hz=1/s – When talking about TVs this means how many different pictures a TV can display in one second. and HDRHigh Dynamic Range – image/video with more dynamic range (contrast range) or Dolby VisionDynamic HDR-format with a color depth of up to 12 Bits and Mastering of up to 10,000 Nits on the screen. VRRVariable Refresh Rate – synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the output refresh rate of the graphics card is supported from 1080p to 4K in 120 Hz and the low input lag is perfect for all games. At 4K@120Hz, the LG only has an input lag of 6 ms. Thus, the interaction between TV, console and controller input is almost seamless and is not delayed. With the available Auto Low Latency Mode, the TV automatically switches to the best picture mode when a console is turned on and recognizes it immediately.

Solid sound, but no DTS
The 2.2 sound system with 40 watts of power has a solid sound and is Dolby AtmosObject-based surround sound format with 3D-Sound from any direction capable. The sound profile is relatively balanced in the mids, but drops off in the trebles especially at high volumes. Bass is very weak and only comes across slightly because the casing is very thin. The LG QNED90 supports eARC, so high-quality, uncompressed audio can be passed on to a compatible receiver via an HDMI connection. Unfortunately, the TV does not support DTSMulti-channel-sound-system (Surround Sound) competing with Dolby Digital.
For an even better sound, a soundbar can be connected to the QNED90, as it has a digital audio output and Soundbar Mode Control, where the soundbar takes over the sound mode selected on the TV.
- 2.2 sound system with 40 W
- Dolby Atmos
- eARC HDMI
- Solid sound profile
- No DTS
- Weak bass
Everything your heart desires
With a new Magic Remote and a new WebOS, LG has polished everything for its smart TVs in 2021. The new system is now more clearly divided and shows all available apps immediately at a glance. The remote control is now flat and has more quick access buttons for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney + and the App Store. By the way, the latter offers a large selection of apps, where every user will find what they are looking for.
With the Magic Remote, you can easily navigate through the menu with a pointer via gesture, which works smoothly and without glitches. Apple Airplay can be used to connect to an iOS device, and recording via USB is also available – but there is no twin tuner.Β The integrated microphone can access Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa and it is even possible to change the inputs or picture settings via the voice assistant.
- Cleaned up WebOS 6.0
- Remote control with gesture control
- Large selection of apps
- Voice assistants
- Microphone
- Apple AirPlay

- No twin tuner
Strong contrast due to new technology
The LG QNED90 is a very good 4K TV that can deliver the best contrast for an ADS panel thanks to its new mini-LED technology. Especially in bright rooms, the TV offers a great picture due to its high brightness of 1000 nits and is well equipped for sports events, movies, series and gaming. The 3 ms response time and the low input lag of 6 ms at 4K@120 Hz significantly improve the picture experience. Those who mainly enjoy their movies in dark rooms should perhaps look for an OLED panel, because blooming also occurs in the QNED90. For whom that is out of the question anyway, this LG has a TV that is in almost no way inferior to the competition.
However, the price of this new product line from LG should not be ignored. Compared to the in-house OLED competitors, which can score a bit better in many categories, the new QNED miniLED TVs are not quite as cheap on the market.
- Peak brightness 1000 nits
- Contrast 6000:1
- 3 ms response time
- 4K at 120 Hz
- Blooming in dark scenes
- No DTS
