LG NANO85 – NANO85 - The midrange of the NanoCell seires

Published 08/07/20
Update 05/06/21

LG’s premium LCD series now has a more stylish name with NanoCell Series – because the NanoCell technology has already been used in the previous year’s models. Without any doubt, the Korean manufacturer wants to focus more on this display technology and thus differentiate the series more from the cheaper UHD series. The NANO85 is positioned in the midrange of this series and impresses with its wide viewing angle and great gaming performance. Especially the HDMI 2.1 interface makes it an interesting candidate for the future!

Average design

The design of the LG Nano85 reflects its position within the lineup: It is simple and flat, the frame is quite narrow, but the back is completely made of plastic. It has two wide stand feet, which gives the TV a secure stand, but it still wobbles slightly when pushed. Unfortunately, there is no cable management provided so that the setup makes a clean impression – LG has really been sleeping in this regard in the entire NanoCell lineup. All in all, it does not look quite as high-quality, but it is quite stable. On the wall, it definitely cuts a fine figure due to the low depth and the narrow frame.

Reasonable picture quality

The Nano85’s 10 Bit ADS panel offers a rather average contrast ratio of 1700:1, which is nevertheless much better than other IPS and ADS models. The same applies to the viewing angle, which is not optimal, but still significantly larger than with VA panels. In terms of brightness, the NanoCell 85 has a peak brightness of ~550 Nits, which is okay, but unfortunately too low to display HDR content nicely. Therefore, it only slightly differs from SDR content on this TV. This is also not ideal for a bright room, but is compensated by the fact that the TV has a brilliant reflection handling. Although the Nano85 has local dimming, it is rather disappointing due to the edge backlighting, especially in dark scenes. Due to the below-average color uniformity, a slight dirty screen effect is visible in the center, but it should not really be noticeable in normal use. The wide color gamut makes the colors on the TV look quite vivid, though – compared to last year’s model, the SM8600, not too much has changed.

The NanoCell TV also has the dynamic HDR format Dolby Vision IQ.

Great motion handling

The motion handling of the LG NANO85 is excellent. The display has a native refresh rate of 120Hz which is really important for good motion handling – only few TVs in this price range can do that! Furthermore, the response time of ~4ms is extremely low. Because the LEDs can change its color that fast, there is hardly any motion blur visible. For a conventional LED TV this is a fantastic value, which can only be beaten by OLEDs. To minimize the motion blur even further, the Black Frame Insertion feature can be used, which is available at 120 Hz.

The backlight can not really be considered flicker-free. It flickers at a frequency of 240Hz, but that should be enough for the human eye to perceive it as continuous illumination.

In addition, content with a low frame rate can be interpolated to 60Hz using the motion interpolation feature. Stutter can thus be corrected during slow camera movements. It is nice that the NANO85 can remove judder from all sources.

Everything for a good gaming experience

With the NANO85 you have all the features you need for good gaming. The input lag is <16ms, making the TV extremely responsive to external inputs, like a keystroke on the console’s gamepad. It also has an Auto Low Latency Mode. This automatically detects when the console is switched on and the TV automatically switches to game mode to minimize the input lag. It also has a variable refresh rate via HDMI Forum VRR to avoid screen tearing. The HDMI 2.1 interface makes the TV an excellent entry model for the upcoming next gen consoles Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. The wide viewing angle also makes it an excellent choice if you want to play with several on the TV.

Average sound system

The 2.0 channel 20W sound system is nothing really special. The integrated speakers produce a passable sound and dialogues are reproduced clearly. However, its maximum volume is sufficiently high even for greater livingrooms. Unfortunately, the basses are not really convincing – which is quite normal for integrated speakers. If you want a better atmosphere, with rich, three-dimensional Dolby Atmos sound via the HDMI eARC, you might consider expanding your setup with a sound bar.

But you should keep in mind that DTS is not supported.

Smart operating system

Just like the other LG TVs of 2020, the NANO85 was equipped with the smart operating system webOS 5.0. It can be operated very intuitively and is controlled with LG’s Magic Remote. This allows a cursor to be controlled by hand movements, which is very similar to the way the Nintendo Wii is operated. But if you prefer a conventional operation with arrow keys, you can also do this as you like. The menus can be navigated very smoothly, and those who still find the operation too complicated can use either Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant as a language assistant. To make the data exchange between the TV and Apple devices as easy as possible Apple Airplay 2 is available.

The choice of apps is huge and streaming classics like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ are pre-installed – so you can browse your library immediately.

With LG ThinQ you can also use the TV as a control center for other smart home applications, which are conveniently displayed on a dashboard. There is no twin tuner, but functions like time shift and USB recording are still available.

Great ADS panel television for SDR content, especially for gaming

The overall performance of the NANO86 is quite good and it is a good TV for most uses. Thanks to the ADS panel, it has a very wide viewing angle and can produce a quite respectable picture quality in bright surroundings. However, the NanoCell TV does not perform quite as well in dark surroundings. Responsible for this is the low contrast ratio, the terrible local dimming feature and the mediocre black, which looks grayish under these conditions.

However, it’s noticeable that LG has mainly focused its attention on the upcoming console generation. The 120Hz panel has great motion handling and all the features necessary for entertaining gaming are present – including an HDMI 2.1 interface!

Alternatives to the LG NANO85

Samsung Q60T
NanoCell vs QLED

Probably the biggest competitor of the NanoCell series is the QLED series from Samsung. Compared to the QLED entry model, the Q60T, the NANO85 is the better TV in many aspects. The ADS panel has a much wider viewing angle and better reflection handling. Both have a low peak brightness, but the NANO85 is still better suitable in bright environments than the QLED – even if it does not look like that in our comparison chart. However, the Q60T has a better picture quality in dark rooms due to the VA panel; with a great contrast ratio of 7000:1 and a deep and even blacks.

Things look different in terms of motion handling. The NANO85 is clearly superior here. The Q60T only has a 60Hz panel instead of the 120Hz of the NanoCell TV. Its response time is also much higher with ~8ms, whereby the motion sharpness clearly suffers. Moreover, the NANO85 is better equipped for gaming. In contrast to the QLED, it has a variable refresh rate and an HDMI 2.1 interface – because the QLED series is not using this until the Q70T.

Sony X800H
Sony's ADS TV

The Sony XH80 is very similar to the NANO85. Both have the characteristics that come with an ADS panel – only LG’s NanoCell TV makes most things a touch better.  The picture quality in bright rooms and the wide viewing angle is equally good, but the NANO85 has a better picture quality in darker surroundings due to its higher contrast ratio – even if it’s still not really good. The main difference is more to be found in motion handling and gaming. In contrast to the NANO85, the XH80 has a panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz instead of 120Hz and Judder cannot be removed from all sources.Beyond a good response time and an Auto Low Latency Mode, you will not find any gaming features. The XH80 has no variable refresh rate and no HDMI 2.1 interface. If you are interested in next gen gaming, you should rather consider the NANO85.

LG NANO90
Next more expensive NanoCell

The NANO90 is the next more expensive NanoCell TV from LG and they are very similar to each other – even though the NANO90 performs better in almost every category. It has a better picture quality in bright rooms due to the higher peak brightness, which also has a positive effect on the HDR performance. In dark rooms, its picture quality is not the most impressive either, but thanks to Full Array Local Dimming, it is clearly superior to that of the NANO85. For gaming and motion handling, the two show a similarly good performance and have all the features you need – including the HDMI 2.1 interface.
