Gamma

In the context of monitors, gamma is the term for the way the brightness values are represented on a screen. Thus, higher gamma values result in stronger light-dark contrasts. A low gamma can cause images to appear too dark, while a high gamma can actually cause details in bright areas to be lost. Generally, the gamma value should be around 2.2 to ensure the most realistic representation possible.
